Each year, the importance of embracing natural and holistic self-care is captivating the mainstream more and more.
As consumers are growing more and more interested in their health and wellness, we are seeing an influx of trends emerge.

Q: What does it even mean when something is trending?
A: A trending topic is one that experiences a surge in popularity across social networks at a higher rate than other subjects, words or phrases.
Trending topics usually arise when something is highly relevant or timely such as current events and or breaking news.
However, topics also trend due to the human nature of wanting to be a part of a group. Taking part in the discussion of what is trending prevents us from feeling FOMO (fear of missing out). If you see something shared many times, it is most likely to capture your attention and persuade you to act or think in a certain way.
Now that we understand what trends are, how they happen, and why.... let’s look at some specific examples of trends happening in the health and wellness community.
Gut Health

You might have seen the term "gut health" across your social media platforms this year. How do I know this? Well to begin, the hash tag #guthealth has racked up more more than 202 billion views on TikTok!
"Gut Health" refers to the amount of "good" and "bad" bacteria and yeast in your digestive system.
What factors affect your gut health?
Stress
Poor Nutrition
Long-term use of antibiotics
So is the hype really worth paying attention to?
Experts such as Dr. Humprey, say yes absolutely. Since the gut microbes influence the release of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters, your gut health can impact your overall mood.

Coconut Oil Pulling

There is some controversy around coconut oil pulling these days but many advocates, such as myself, do exist.
This practice that has been around for thousands of years and originated in ancient India. The purpose being to purify the body by pulling toxins out through the gums and mouth.
Tips for coconut pulling:
Spit the oil in your trash can, it can clog the sink
Try only 5-10 minutes at first so that your jaw does not hurt (Aim for 20 minutes long term goal)
Keep yourself busy while doing this (make your bed, stretch, pet your dogs!)
Practice this everyday for best results
Although there is no concrete evidence for coconut oil pulling, it leaves my mouth feeling clean and refreshed and I have faith in it's ability to prevent oral disease.
Fitness Apps

If you are like me, going to a public gym is the last place you want to go to get in a good exercise.
Instead, I prefer doing at home workouts, exploring a small yoga studio or somewhere outside with the trees.
That is when apps such as All trails and Youtube videos like Yoga with Bird come in handy.
Currently the top US mobile health/ fitness apps are Planet Fitness and Calm.
What to look out for when using these apps:
Fitness app data is not protected like health information
-Fitness trackers are usually connected via bluetooth and personal data can be susceptible to hacking.
Change/ Update your location settings
-The default on fitness apps are not always the most secure.
Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication
-Also, be sure to keep the device and app up to date for the best security!
All and all, as people continue to exercise from home and the need for a physical gym space decreases, we will continue to see a rise in fitness apps.

From the timeless practice of these trends and the increased awareness, individuals are offered a variety of approaches for a healthier lifestyle.
I also wanted to share this blog post that I thought very interesting. It discusses what trends Cleveland Clinic thinks should go viral in 2023 such as using face toner and eating your adaptogens:
Trending topics are ever-changing and it is important to always do your own solid research before diving into a new diet or routine just because it is trending.
Specific factors that contribute to a trend can vary and the dynamics of trending topics can be influenced by the specific platform/ medium in which they occur.
